Solar Cold Storage

Inficold Solar Cold storage provides uninterrupted cooling without requiring electrical batteries. It is a flexible design for 5-100 MT size, can be installed on an existing cold storage and has the highest precooling capacity (compared to any other competing technology).

The solution addresses the high food spoilage rates in India caused by inefficient cold-chain network. Large cold storages are quite often located in large cities, and farm/village level cold storage are primarily non-existent due to unreliable grid electricity. Grid resilient cold chain solution are necessary for India, which is one of the largest producers of milk, vegetables, fruits, flowers, fishes, and eggs, all being perishable commodities.

Inficold has integrated solar photovoltaics on cold storage in 5 to 100 MT capacity. The solar integration technology for cold storage was jointly developed in partnership with National Institute of Solar Energy, the autonomous institute under Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India.

The solar energy is stored in thermal energy storage for cooling during non-solar hours. These systems can automatically switch over to grid electricity if thermal energy storage is depleted below a minimum level. These systems can be configured by the end user in the temperature range of 0 to 20 C. Inficold design and manufacture solar powered cold storage in both container and indoor cold room options. The containerized units are quickly deployable and require minimal civil work at the site.

This technology is modular and multiple of thermal energy storage can be integrated on larger cold storages. In fact, the top three largest solar cold storages based on thermal energy storage in India are designed and installed by Inficold. Inficold is also the pioneer in the World, who have integrated solar energy on existing cold storages, which got defunct due to high operational cost of electricity and diesel.

Solar cold storage enables farm level cold chain in locations with weak grid availability. Extending the shelf life of perishables improves the farmer income by reducing spoilage, allowing aggregation, avoiding glut periods, and reducing transport bottlenecks during peak period of production.

Solar cold storage can be used for various applications such as fruit, vegetable, flower, egg, fish, ripening, vaccine, grain, etc. Inficold likes taking challenges and always on the forefront to develop technologies for new cold storage applications. Inficold has also customized solar cold storages for long term storage of grain, pulses & millets, which require low humidity and temperature values. A leading state government of India has been operating an Inficold 5MT solar cold storage to keep vaccines at a hospital – the first and only such kind of installation in India.
